The Wild Boy of Northchurch

To Northchurch on Sunday, to act as Godfather at my niece’s Christening – a mercifully mild ceremony these days.

Facing the church door is this –

Peter the Wild Boy

Peter the Wild Boy, [died] 1785.  His story, according to Wikipedia, is here –Peter the Wild Boy

His original soubriquet evidently followed him to the grave.  He died at quite an advanced age, and, by that stage, was no longer very wild.  I suppose Peter the Tame Old Man wouldn’t really have the same ring to it.

  1. Thanks for your comment, Tom. I think his original name has more of a ring to it, really. I have had hundreds of hits on this post today – I suppose because of the story on the BBC site …
