From time to time readers have written in with questions that – to be frank with you – I simply don’t know the answer to. “Who makes Aldi gin?” for instance, or “Why are Derbyshire called the Phantoms?” or “Is Simon Heffer mad?”. I can guess the answers, but I don’t know.
So I thought it might be a nice idea to call on the expertise of my good friend Mr. Answers. Since Fleetway Publications unfortunately had to let him go – a few years ago now – he has been making good use of his vast store of knowledge by contributing to Wikipedia (the Encyclopedia that anyone can edit!) from his home in Godalming.
He has, though, graciously agreed to appear on this blog from time to time to answer any questions you may care to pose. I can assure you that all used postage stamps will be put to good use (such as – under the new arrangements – financing our local library and museum).
To whet your appetites, here is an example of Mr. Answers in action in his heyday (1969). Some of the figures quoted may be a little out of date now – so it might be a good idea to check them against another source before quoting them in any essays, blog posts or White Papers you may be planning to write.
Take it away, Mr. Answers!
